Oral Presentation Practice:

#1.)  When I read the chapters, “The Wall of Fire Rising” and “Night Women” in the book Krik Krak by Edwinge Danticat, these two stories seemed to be the most eye catching to me.  When I say eye catching, they seemed different that all the other stories because most of these stories talked about the Hatian Culture and how everyone was fleeing the country because of the Macouts.  The Government was in full control of the Haitian people.  I thought these two chapters had a connection because they both have a mother and son but no father.  I thought this would make a good piece in our created performance cause we could see what both sides looked like in both stories.  In both chapters, Little Guy and Night Womens son were going through a tough time because Little Guy just lost his father and Night womens a prostetute.  After all, it seemed like the performance worked out by putting Lily as Night Women and Little Guy as Night Women's son.  It was a very sad but a forgiving performance.  It started off sad because Little Guy found out his father was dead but his mom will always be there for him.  It then went to Little Guy seeing his mother with another man which was shocking for him.  In the end, Little Guy forgave his mother because he knows that she wants the best for him and to live a better life than she has provided him.

#2.)  The theme that I tried to show was love, support, and forgiveness.  I played Little Guy throughout the act.  The conflict that occurred was one, I found out the my father died by jumping off a hot air balloon and 2 I found out that my mother was actually a night women.  My relationship with my mother was close until I found out she was lying to me almost every night.  I soon forgave her cause she wanted the best for me.  The tone in our performance was normal small- talk conversations but at times they got intense because I could not  believe my father killed himself and that my mother was with some other man.  The performance was in the same setting which was the living room and my small bedroom.  The visitor was in the living room.  Our setting is not much because we have three scenes, the part when Lily found out about Guy (dead), the visitor/ table/living room, and my bedroom.

#3.)  I came up with my groups idea about combining The Walls of Fire Rising into Night Women.  I pictured Lily and Guy in Night women and hers sons point of view.  Lily would be Night Women and Little Guy would be the son.  Everything was the same in Night Women like in the book but I felt like the part where Little Guy heard about his dead father was important in the beginning because It showed we start off as, The Wall Of Fire Rising.  We changed a lot throughout practicing.  We changed a lot of the props, blocking, and even the script.  We added the part about Little Guy finding out about his mother and in the end he was forgiving and loving.  I wanted to show love and forgiveness.  I wanted to give our audience a good understanding by making the performance creative but combining the two scenes.  I felt our performance was not too straightforward but creative enough where they knew it was a combination of The Wall of Fire Rising and Night Women.

#4.)  At first we were not so good at playing the characters  Little Guy and Lily.  Eventually, we showed lot of eye contact with each other because it is just me and her talking.  I also like whenever we had a monologue we would step up to the shining light and act it out which looked professional.  I liked how we move forward up toward the audience (The end of stage) when we spoke our monologue.  We also used most of the stage which was good.  Left right, and center parts.  I also liked the color of the when it was blue for night time and then when I found out it had a dramatic red light which showed like a thriller feeling which was perfect.  After watching our video performance I liked when I woke up and then saw my mother with the visitor.  After I saw this happen the lights went straight to red, like a thriller.  In the end, we made up and hugged each other which played character cause thats what a mother and son would do after they make up.

#5.)  My role was Little Guy the whole performance.  I felt I played Little Guy Well.  I showed that I looked poor with my wrinkled, short t-shirt.  I also used the backpack to show I was coming back from school.  After watching our video, I think I was loud enough that the audience could hear me.  I Also think I played Little Guy well.  i thought I could have given more emotion at times but did well showing that when I banged on the table when I found out my father died.  I also gasped when I saw my mother doing her job.

#6.)  I could have improved on memorizing.  I messed up a couple times on my monologue because it was too repetitive.  I also could have given more emotion like I was saying.  I did well showing that I forgave my mom for what she has done for me and how I should be grateful.  I showed that I forgave her because I gave a hug.  I thought everything was smooth blocking and memorizing for the most part.

7.)  I thought Krik Krak by Edwinge Danticat was a wonderful book.  It really showed you the background behind the Haitian Culture and what the Government did to its people.  I learned the most from the chapter, Night Women and The Wall of Fire Rising.  This chapter showed what true sacrifice is.  She sacrificed her identity to her little boy and it ended up turning bad but in the end the mother just wanted the best for her child, Little Guy.  She wanted her boy to have a better life than this.  This made me sad to think that some people in our world are actually live this type of lifestyle.  I also learned that it takes lot of preparation to memorize your script and perform it in front of an audience.
