5. Select a passage from a novel you have chosen to study which provides an effective introduction of an important character or characters. How would you use staging, design and acting to ensure that this introduction would have dramatic importance for the audience?
In the book I would choose the scene when Daniel crashes his car into the tree and Desiree was the one too see this happen. This was an important introduction for Daniel. This part was important because it showed the true connection Desiree had with Daniel even though they have never met before. Desiree knew it was love at first sight. For staging I would have the car crash happen then I would have just Daniel and Desiree together. The spotlight would only be on Daniel and Desiree as Desiree is trying to save Daniels life. I would show Desiree slowly touching his face and touching the blood with her hands. I would have some emotion from Desiree as she is using all of her breath to help dave Daniel. After Desiree has her time with Daniel, I would have the light go back on the full stage and have Desiree scream for help from the peasants. I feel this would show not only an emotional but also a dramatic connection between Daniel and Desiree.
7. Select a passage from a novel you have chosen to study where suspense is the dominant mood conveyed to the reader. Indicate how, by staging and action, you might explore a suspenseful scene on stage for an audience.
- When Daniels father comes and picks him up
- The suspense when Daniel leaves Desiree in her poor village hoping to see him again soon
- The mood for Desiree changed after she saw his father fly in
- Desiree's mood went from "My love of my life," to "Will I ever see him again"
- I can only imagine what the emotions were going through for Desiree
- Staging:
I would have Desiree's house in the middle with Daniel inside and a door that shows outside which is the village. I would create a loud helicopter noise that shows that Daniels father has arrive to the poor village looking for his son. I would have Desiree go outside with her parents and then talk with Daniels father on the right side of the stage. This would focus on Desiree and Daniels father talking. The blocking would be spread out which is what Im trying to show. Daniels in the house hurt while Daniel's father is acting very arrogant looking for his son.
- I think this would create suspense in this scene because it is a big part in the story.
- I think this scene could also be used for Question number 9 because it asks what is it like when two cultures "clash." In the book this would be perfect because the two cultures are the poor and the rich. The rich would be Daniels father and the poor would be Desiree and the peasants.
1. Select a passage from a novel you have chosen to study where a change of atmosphere impacts on the characters and/or the course of events. By paying due attention to the context of the passage, show how such a passage might be dramatized for an audience.
- I think a change in the atmosphere effected Daniel and Daniels father
- Daniel got in a car crash maybe because he wasn't used to the village area because it is more run down than the wealthy.
- Daniels father was like "I have all the power". sort of feeling so he acted rude with the poor people and gave the journey maker .72 cents
- Hes so rich and could have given him more money but he is too arrogant to them
- The atmosphere changes from the rich and the poor.
- If I were to stage this I would make the wealthy are look nice and clean with expensive accessories around like fresh cut grass.
- To show the poor what they live in, I would have long thick grass with dead trees and lot of gardens because they are too poor to buy there own food unlike the poor.
- The atmosphere are way different between these two (Rich vs the poor).
- I think the rich powers would really show the change in behavior especially coming from the wealthy part to the poor part of the village like Daniels father.
