History of Haiti

Haiti is a Country in the Caribbean and is neighbors with the the Dominican- Republic.  There are a couple of small islands in Haiti called Haspaniola, Grand Caye, tortue and other smaller islands.  Haiti won their independence from the Country of France.  Haiti was the second Country to do this with the United States being the first to free themselves.  Throughout time Haiti has many hit with many problems that cause poverty.  Many kids like Edwinge Danticat flew to the Unites States as immigrants.  The land in Haiti has high elevations and not too many rivers.  The island was first discovered by Indians.  If you may not know the word "Haiti" means "the body of land."
After the French revolution the slaves took down the colonists and spread all around.  About 1.2 million Haitian people are in the United States.  there were five major immigrations which were, The Haitian Revolution, The United States Occupation of Haiti, the period of Duvaliers, and The overthrow of President Aristide.  After many of the Haitians looked for residence like the U.S, Mexico, Jamaica, France, and Africa.  To this day, many of the Haitians are successful and working as taxi drivers, professors, and doctors.  These Haitian Americans came from nothing to something.   In the 1950's president Francois Duvalier was voted President.  After dying his son Jean- Claude was given the position.  This was the time when many of the Haitians moved from Haiti to places like the U.S.  This was truly a bad time to live in Haiti.
