Review of Musical
Last Wednesday on February 21, 2018, I watched my schools play, Les Miserable by Victor Hugo. I thought the play was very good considering it was many of the actors first time performing. You could tell in the beginning that some were nervous than others but as the play went along it got better. If I were the actors Im not sure how I would perform cause this play is one of the longest plays I have ever seen. Im sure it took lots of practice, time memorizing, and blocking the scenes. The summary of this musical was about this man named Jean Valjean who was put in a prison for stealing a loaf of bred. Jean Valjean was put into a prison for his bad action. Although this action seems very silly people back then were very poor and serious. Jean Valjean spent a total of nineteen years in this prison. Yes, nineteen full years in prison working as a slave working for a man named Javert which was played by Jenna Denomme. He also tried to escape which he later got in deeper trouble. After waiting for his time to be done he was finally released from the treacherous prison. There was one problem. First, what would he do after he has been released? How would he be able to find a job and make no money? After being in prison for almost two decades who would want to hire him? Without a job he would make no money and would have no where to sleep. Everything would think he was a physco or a bad guy all for stealing just one loaf of bread. Although, some people treated Valjean with sweetness and comfort. Valjean soon enough sets himself up again! He steals this expensive silverware from the rich Bishop. The Bishop realizes that his silverware is missing and calls the police to let them know he was a thief. Jean makes a deal with the Bishop that from now on he will be an honest man and will not steal anything else for the rest of his life. Everyone now knows of Jean. Throughout the play he then becomes the mayor of the town. Everyone used to think of Jean as a bad guy even Javert but soon Javert can see how much he has changed to be a fine man. Javert and Jean seem to argue a lot. Jean heres that a poor girl named Cosette played by Maggie Guarino is adopted by Valjean. This will be a huge part of Jean's life after Cosette's mother sadly died early in Cosette's life.
There are some major themes throughout the play, Les Mis which are relationship, poorness, and love. Relationship plays a huge factor between Cosette and Jean. Cosette had known very little about Jean and all of a sudden, next thing you know is the Jean is her father. Marius took very good care of her until she died. Everyone back then was very poor and spending money on a kid was pretty expensive especially for Jean Valjean's budget. Anyways, I really liked the different scenes throughout the play. Not only that but the costumes in the beginning of all the prisoners digging the soil was very cool. I liked how they were singing and digging at the same exact time. The costume for the diggeres I liked the bet because it really would look like something a poor prisoner would wear. The lighting was also perfectly time and made good use for the characters. My favorite scene was when Jenna who is play Javert jumps of the bridge after being shot multiple time during the war. They guns and gun shots made it sound realistic in a way and thought it was interesting to see. They used all of the crappy, broken materials to protect themselves from the shots. I really thought Mariel and Julia did an amazing job performing. Their performance was very well done. The signing from both of them was very professional and especially Julia when she started crying with emotion while she sang. Mariel used her tone of voice which was very good. I could tell that all the actors took a bunch of time out of their schedules to memorize and perfect their lines.
