Part one --
In Act 3 Scene 1 who is really responsible for Mercutio’s death: Mercutio, who provoked the fight, Tybalt who stabbed him, or Romeo who got between them? Use specific evidence (direct quotes) from the play to back this up.
1. I feel Romeo is somewhat responsible for Mercutio's death. Mercutio has been Romeo's best friend since the start of the play. Romeo did not really take part in the fight between Mercutio and Tybalt. If I were Romeo and my best friend was in a fight with someone else I would step in and try and stop it before anyone gets hurt. Unfortunately, Romeo was not looking to fight anyone not even Tybalt so then Mercutio stepped in for Romeo. Mercutio was stabbed and then bled to death. After the fact when Mercutio died , Romeo regretted not fighting Tybalt and should have taken Mercutio's place. Mercutio showed bravery and stood up for his best friend, Romeo. Romeo said to Tyblat, "Villain am I none." Tybalt really wants to fight Romeo and said, "Boy this shall not excuse the injuries that thou hast done me. Therefor turn and draw." This quote from Tybalt shows how much he wants to fight Romeo but Romeo feels a fight between them is not necessary. Also, Romeo does not want to battle because he has just married Juliet who is Tybalt's good cousin. Romeo is making himself look like baby so Mercutio steps in. In all, I believe Romeo is responsible for his best friend, Mercutio's death since he did not fight Tybalt.
Part two --
How would you stage this as a director? Be specific.
If I was the director for this Act I would change some parts. Tybalt and Mercutio are having an angry talk about the party the other day ago. Suddenly, Romeo comes from behind and asks Tybalt to back off Mercutio. Tybalt is furious and wants to battle and kill Romeo. Romeo is not into fighting right now because of his lovely marriage to Juliet and pulls Mercutio from Tybalt. Tybalt has not gotten what he wants, which is to fight Romeo. Mercutio sticks up for his friend and goes after it with Tybalt. Mercutio wants to fight Tybalt since Romeo will not. Romeo does not know what to do so he pulls Mercutio but it was too late, Mercutio has been stabbed by Tybalt. Tybalt has defeated Mercutio and scatters away from the scene that he has created. Romeo is crying about his friend's death and wants to save him but it is too late. Romeo is livid and now wants to battle Tybalt.
